Lapicida interior inspiration - Edinburgh project

Jonathan Palmer of Lanyon Interior Design has worked closely with Lapicida on a wide diversity of interiors projects for some years. One of Jonathan’s most recent projects was a large private home development at Muirfield View, Edinburgh which was a full build that took 5 years to complete. Lapicida provided all the surfaces throughout this impressive 5-bedroom home. Here is an insight, from start to finish, into our close collaboration and how working together, we have helped to create a truly special property.

Lapicida is an inspirational destination for interior designers and decorators. Visiting Lapicida and working together with our team of design experts is always mutually rewarding. In this instance, Jonathan invited his clients from Edinburgh on as special visit to view the wide collection of surfaces in our spectacular 20,000 sqm Harrogate showroom. They viewed the wide range of porcelains, reclaimed and bespoke items on display, took advantage of our pre-bookable meeting rooms, enjoyed a coffee and chatted through the finer details with our design team.

DINING IN RUSTIC STYLE

The home itself has stunning views of the 13th hole of championship Archerfield Links golf course, just south of Edinburgh. Jonathan influenced the architecture and build design throughout the property. To ensure these views were maximised, the house was designed with an “upside down” configuration, with the dining room, kitchen and lounge on the first floor, bedrooms and gym on the ground floor.

The dining room is an impressive open plan living space where the focal point is a central feature fireplace made from our stunning, charismatic textured Genuine Antique Reclaimed Heathcliffe sandstone, which adds a rustic highland feel to the room. The floor adds a light, natural and inviting sensibility and is created using highly practical and beautiful planks from our Porcelain Wood Collection. These perfectly emulate the look of genuine timber.

EXPANSIVE AND NATURAL KITCHEN

This wonderful porcelain wood floor expands seamlessly throughout the house into the kitchen and beyond.

The kitchen itself is so light and airy and the wood effect porcelain floor complements the kitchen units perfectly. It was the ideal choice for the kitchen and living areas as porcelain wood is so incredibly durable and requires virtually no maintenance, unlike real wood.

COMFORTABLE AND PRACTICAL LIVING

The porcelain wood floor flows seamlessly throughout the property. This creates an opulent feel, leading to black framed Crittall doors which open to a cosy living room with stunning views over the golf course beyond.

Paired with a neutrally coloured central area rug, the porcelain wood floor gives it a homely feel and complements the carefully curated furniture.

“What I really love about Lapicida is the sheer diversity and quality of their products. The showroom is truly inspirational: from the huge range of of porcelain and stone tiles; to the inspirational displays; to the beautiful one off products to create a truly wow effect. It is also great place to bring clients. To allow them to see the finishes in the large scale room sets in a welcoming yet premium environment. For this project, Lapicida provided all the surfaces together with bespoke pieces. The product exceeded all expectations.”

CREATING A REAL SPLASH

The property boasts five luxury bathrooms featuring breathtakingly beautiful Lapicida surfaces and custom-made pieces. The first bathroom has a stunning quartermatch porcelain feature wall behind the freestanding bath which extends around to the walls of the shower area.

We currently stock a very similar next-generation European porcelain slabs with a polished finish. These replicates a fine veined white marble and achieves a quartermatch pattern by arranging four identical tiles in a particular way. The floor of this bathroom features large format rustic looking porcelain stone tiles.

MOSAIC AND CUSTOM-MADE

The second bathroom also features two beautiful Lapicida items. Our craftsman created the elegant bespoke black marble vanity to the designer’s precise specifications, so it accommodates the basin and complements the bathroom perfectly.

The marble mosaic floor is captivating. Our intricate Italian Carrara Marble Basketweave comprises of pieces of Carrara marble, a classic Italian white stone with grey cloudy veins in a classic basketweave pattern with small inlays of Nero Marquina marble. This creates the illusion of a three-dimensional basketweave pattern.

“This project was a particularly satisfying one. We worked with Jonathan to specify each room ahead of client presentation putting forward several options and advised on the suitability and aesthetic qualities of each surface before they were presented to the client. The Petrified Wood Bowl certainly caught his client’s eye. They also had the chance to see the scale of the bookmatch porcelain slab for the bathroom and feel the texture of the reclaimed sandstone for the fireplace.”

PREHISTORIC AND PARQUET

Finally, the guest toilet strikes a completely different stylistic tone. Richly decorated with an opulent feel, it features two absolutely fascinating Lapicida pieces.

Mounted on a vanity is one of our most unusual products – a Petrified Wood Basin. This inimitable piece of natural history was created over millions of years from the trunk of a fallen tree, buried by sediment and protected from decay. Intense pressure over time fossilised the wood, petrifying it into quartz crystal. All the wonderful details like its bark, cellular structure and even tree rings are perfectly preserved.

The parquet patterned floor looks like wood too, however, it is in fact from our Porcelain Wood Collection. It takes its inspiration from traditional chalets found in the Swiss Alps. It has all the subtle nuances that mimic aged larch wood. Being porcelain rather than wood, it is extremely practical, especially for bathrooms.
