Oriental Opulence: combining light and dark
What is opulence? The word itself is taken from the Latin ‘opulentia’ meaning ‘wealth’. It is a word often used to describe splendour, richness and magnificence – the perfect word to describe luxurious interiors.
Opulence is something that has always fascinated everyone at Lapicida, which is why we are exploring everything from the traditional rich, bold designs of the East and the complete antithesis of the neutral clutter-free feel of minimalism that is especially popular in Japan.
RICH TO RAW
So how do you achieve the rich and opulent look that is so closely associated with the East? For the traditional look, use jewelled tones and statement shades of red, black, golds and greens. To achieve a modern oriental style, introduce raw organic materials and use expanses of large format neutral natural tones of stone or porcelain.
Contemporary ‘East meets West’ styling contrasts warm and cool colours throughout the home, even outside where lush sits alongside a clean and simple garden design.
Bathing is a calming, private luxury indulgence and your surroundings have a large influence on the experience. Imagine bathing with a backdrop of marble. Get the look with Lapicida's Astoria Carrara Marble Vanity against a Shagreen Grey diamond patterned stingray skin-textured porcelain wall and a pure white marble floor. How serene.
Alternatively, if you prefer the look of natural wood, Dekton® has a wonderful reinterpretation of wood. Makai bathroom floor tiles have a relaxing aura. Accentuate the space with louvered doors that allow light to gently light the room, adding a colonial ambience to a scheme.
Dark green ceramic tiles are an excellent choice if you are wishing to create a dramatic backdrop to plain kitchen surfaces. Offset these with stainless steel fixtures and fittings for a simple yet effective look. Lapicida's stunning emerald green glazed Delpht tiles also work especially well with copper tones.
Want to achieve an opulent yet timeless look? Try Lapicida Nero Antica. These black limestone tiles have a beautiful patina, reminiscent of antique reclaimed floors. They add a sophisticated, contemporary touch to kitchen spaces.
Wood brings a wonderful warmth to an interior, however, being a natural product, it does have its limitations in terms of practicality. Lapicida’s new Albero range of porcelains has all the beauty of wood but none of the marking, scratching, scuffing or warping. These wood-effect porcelain floors create a golden glow and bring a richness, yet simplicity, to the floor of any contemporary home or business.
‘Shou Sugi Ban’, the ancient Japanese art of charring wood, is recreated in our Fusta range. Shou Sugi Ban is a technique used to preserve wood, yet our new porcelain Fusta porcelain tiles are infinitely more durable and available in light and dark shades.
You can bring understated oriental elegance and a touch of luxury to an exterior space with a palette of grey or gold stone finishes. For an historic natural sandstone, our Genuine Antique English Reclaimed Flags date back to the 18th century whilst Lapicida Villasse Ash porcelain tiles reproduce the realism of ancient limestones.
Finally, the Lapicida Illusion range, including Illusion White, expertly blends the nuances of ancient minerals and fossil shells with contemporary design to create an incredibly detailed and fascinating exterior floor or wall surface.
