Highland Retreat

Contemporary ‘always-on’ culture drives more and more of us to dream of getting away from it all. Having somewhere we can escape to and disconnect from hectic modern life. Our new design insight looks at the ever-popular ‘Highland Retreat’ design lifestyle.

Second homes in the highlands of Scotland aren’t always practical and affordable for all, though that would of course be the idyll. We are talking about the Scottish baronial interiors style. Think traditional patterns, tartans, old world charm that mines a rich seam of heritage and elegant décor. Everything from hand-painted tiles and accent walls created by real artisans and craftspeople.

This romantic look isn’t geographically exclusive to Scotland. It is also reminiscent of the inspirational landscapes of the north of the British Isles with their wind-swept moors and endless skies, ancestral homes and iconic architecture.

Trends of course follow fashion and ‘heritage chic’ dominated the Autumn/Winter 2018 catwalk, with tweed and tartan highly prominent. Whilst we don’t offer tweed tiles, per se, we do have a multitude of surfaces that echo the ‘Highland Retreat’ look – for every price point.

HOW TO GET THE LOOK

Start by adding some old-world charm to your home or interior scheme by introducing a tile with a rustic and weathered finish. Try Bordeaux Black Cobble with colour tones that vary from dark grey through to black. From £89/M2 +VAT.

Want a real a statement floor? Lapicida’s Belgian Mixed limestone is stunning. This distressed look floor tile in black and dark grey tones has wonderfully subtle impressions of fossil shells and limestone veins. The tile can be laid on the diagonal or in straight lines allowing you to create your own unique design. From £59/M2 +VAT.

Be bold and create an accent wall using Perthshire. This durable new-generation porcelain uses advanced production techniques to beautifully capture the essence and nuances of natural wood. From £39/M2 +VAT.

For a touch of romance, consider using glazed wall tiles or hand-crafted furniture. Lapicida’s statuesque Carrara Marble Refectory Table is beautifully crafted with a solid marble top and traditional oak base. From £2,950 +VAT. While the Delpht Grey decorative wall tiles are made using traditional techniques dating back to the 16th Century. From £595/M2 +VAT.

WE HAVE HISTORY

Lapicida has deep experience working for Historic Scotland and other similar bodies, so we are particularly excited about a style that embraces the richness of antique stone and traditional skills.

Rare antique reclaimed stone is the eternal captivator. It creates an immediate impression and imprints a lasting memory on all who witness its beauty. Much of our reclaimed stone, such as Genuine Antique Barr de Montpellier, has been recovered from medieval, historic and stately homes throughout Europe and the UK. Using specialist technology, Lapicida craftsmen painstakingly restore and completely transform the stone, which has hundreds of years of provenance, and revive it for future generations. The ultimate in sustainable beauty.
