Designers: Collaborating with Lapicida Brings Success
We’re incredibly lucky at Lapicida. We get to work with some of the most inspirational figures of the design world including award-winning architects and interior designers.
We’ve also been quietly carving out a niche of our own in collaborating with bespoke product designers including the wonderfully talented Bethan Gray. Visionary designers like Bethan appreciate how materials and technology can play a liberating and important role in the design process.
Knowing you have a natural stone specialist with a world of knowledge and a wealth of unique manufacturing technologies that can help you realise your ideas means virtually anything is possible. Our technical design team really relish a challenge, so when Bethan recently approached us to help realise several new designs, we got down to business.
The first was a striking collection of monochromatic table pieces for Wallpaper magazine’s Handmade initiative in Milan Salone di Mobile 2013. Inspired by the contrasting marble vertical stripes and chequerboard arches used in churches including Mario Botta’s San Giovanni Battista in Mogno, Switzerland, this collection has received acclaim throughout the industry.
In terms of production, together, we decided upon Nero Marquina and contrasting White Carrara marbles which were precisely shaped utilising CNC contouring, lathing and water-jet cutting before Lapicda craftsman made the finishing touches by hand.
On the back of this success, Bethan also collaborated with Lapicida to produce larger pieces including her Amalfi Cathedral-inspired zig-zag ‘Herringbone’ table. This involved water-jet cutting then melding two slabs of black and white marble to exactly match the natural grain patterns. This was then mounted on elegant tapered brass legs.
Bethan’s special edition ‘Brogue’ table involved engraving 747 individually cut holes to form Bethan’s hallmark brogue pattern along the edge of the elegant single column marble table. It took over 20 hours of painstaking work, but the effect is entrancing. Collaborating with each other has been mutually beneficial and we have learned so much from each other.
As part of London Design Festival and the http://chelseadesignquarter.co.uk/, Lapicida will be hosting an evening with Bethan Gray at our Kings Road showroom on 16 September 2013.
Bethan will be in conversation with Kate Burnett of Schemer Newsletter and Jason Cherrington of Lapicida about this unique approach to design and her exciting collaboration with Lapicida that is producing contemporary masterpieces in natural stone. Pieces from her first series of works will be on display along with new never been seen works created especially for the show. For more information, please click here.
