Your home is a refuge, somewhere that you feel naturally relaxed and comfortable in. Many people’s idyll of this is a place in the country. But how can we achieve this?
A pretty chocolate box cottage in pastel shades? A comfortable rambling rural retreat packed with shabby chic? They both evoke a highly desirable life that is the antithesis of today’s hectic lifestyles.
We call the look ‘Country Charm’ and flooring-wise, it’s something traditionally associated with old English sandstone or an Italian limestone with a fascinating, rich patina. But are you overlooking something? Nothing is more traditional and earthy than the tones of terracotta.
Terracotta has huge appeal. In fact, it’s re-emerging as a much sought after style for those pursuing the country look. At Lapicida, we call this movement ‘Boot Rooms to the Balearics’ – and one of our latest arrivals ‘Porcelain Cotto’ achieves just that, but isn’t what it might seem. Intrigued? More on this exciting product later.
Terracotta brick flooring is not only becoming one of the most popular surfaces on the market, it’s actually an ingenious way to achieve the ‘Country Charm’ look in your home, whether you are set on a classic English look or a more laid-back European style.
So how do you actually go about creating Country Charm with a Mediterranean twist?
Antique reclaimed stone, whilst incredibly rare, is the obvious way to create an immediate impression and imprint a lasting memory on all who witness its beauty. Lapicida is a specialist in reclaiming stunning stone from medieval and stately homes. We often breathe new life into antique terracotta tiles reclaimed from historic buildings and sites located in Europe and beyond.
We have a wide spectrum of customers, each with quite different budgets and requirements. Fortunately, Lapicida caters for all and can help anyone create a floor with the integrity of the terracotta that gives you the foundations for the ‘Country Charm’ look.
If you are seeking a style that faithfully recreates the look of classic tiles reclaimed from houses and Chateaus from southern Europe, Porcelain Cotto is one Lapicida’s newest tile offerings and has been sourced from an historical series of stone-effect porcelain stoneware products. This modern terracotta is available in a rich, earthy reclaimed finish or a lighter natural look. Porcelain Cotto is perfect for transforming indoor and outdoor settings into stylish, functional spaces. It works equally well in a traditional villa setting as it does for a contemporary commercial project. Highly affordable at £79M² +VAT.
Old-world Mediterranean elegance is achievable on an even smaller budget. Alora porcelain tiles have a low sheen glaze and an earthy brown tone that mimics an authentic aged clay complete with scuff markings and spots you'd expect to see in century-old rustic interiors. Alora costs just £49M² +VAT.
Staying with the vintage look and at a similar price-point, Old Faro is a range of antique terracotta effect porcelain tiles that captures the feel of azure blue Mediterranean skies and white-washed architecture. Contrasting blues and whites and the recreation of ageing, fading and patina work to great effect. Old Faro Patterned, Old Faro Blue & White Chequer and Old Faro White are all at £59/M² +VAT.
Want the genuine article? Antique Orleans Terracotta at £260/M² +VAT, is a classic red handmade 18th and 19th Century hexagon terracotta floor tile reclaimed from country houses nestled in the Loire Valley. Prefer something equally historic but square? Lyon Terracotta is a Mediterranean antique terracotta, moulded by hand and fired in French wood-burning kilns around 300 years ago. Used extensively throughout Europe, it is now highly sought after and is priced at £175/M² +VAT. Or choose Genuine Antique Nimes Parefeuille at £180M², a true terracotta classic.
A more affordable alternative, reclaimed from Central Europe, is Genuine Antique Dubrovnik Terracotta. Beautifully rich and distinctive, these square red terracotta tiles are truly striking and give any interior or exterior a warm earthy glow. Red not your style? Genuine Antique Terracotta Dubrovnik Straw, reclaimed from Serbia, is a rectangular soft straw to mink coloured terracotta that can be laid in a parquet pattern. Both retail at available for £99/M² +VAT.
