To celebrate our current design insight theme of ‘Solstice’, we turn the spotlight on some of the the ‘blue’ stones that Lapicida has in its collection.
First, a little history. Stonehenge in Aylesbury, Wiltshire famously aligns to the solstices. The rising sun only reaches the middle of the stones one day of the year where it shines on the central altar.
Stonehenge itself is thought to have been built between 3,000 BC and 1,600 BC making it up to 5,000 years old. The large standing stones that make up the outer circle are believed to be from the Marlborough Downs, situated 20 miles away. These are called ‘sarsens’ which are silicified sandstone, and they have been used as a building material for thousands of years.
The smaller stones, however, are known as ‘bluestones’ which are volcanic and igneous rock. Bluestones are believed to have been hauled over 150 miles away from the Preseli Hills in Wales.
